Don Sawchuk – Underdog
(Americanada Records, 2017)
Don Sawchuk’s new release features 12 original songs recorded in Toronto and Waterloo. His voice reminds me of Ed Robertson (Barenaked Ladies) with its direct delivery and clever story-telling vibe.
The song Where Are You Now? is inspired by Sawchuk’s late sister, Judy. The album is dedicated to her memory.
Right On Time has a memorable melody and some tasty guitar playing. You Are the One is a 3/4 waltz with lush strings. Drowning In Tears has some excellent harmonica parts meandering in among the vocal lines.
Other highlights include Underdog, Let Your Music Play, and Mercy.
Sawchuk has surrounded himself with a cast of talented musicians. Gary Craig (drums) and John Dymond (bass) are a rock-solid rhythm section that have decades of experience in Canadian Music. Craig has played with Jann Arden, Anne Murray, Bruce Cockburn, The Rankin Family and countless others. Dymond has played with Bruce Cockburn, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings and Susan Aglukark, among others. They are joined by JK Gulley (guitar), Doug Romanow (keyboards) and the legendary Roly Platt on harmonica.
This album is available on vinyl and CD, and is accompanied by a full songbook with lyrics, melodies and guitar chords.
